Naked Coconut Water

Coconut water is the new big thing. Full of potassium and other electrolytes, it's also free of fat, preservatives, and added sugars. With all the buzz, I recently gave Naked Coconut Water a taste test.

The verdict: It tasted a bit like unripe coconuts. Well, it's not horrible, but I do think it is an acquired taste. The good news is it is light and I felt particularly refreshed afterwards. I think it is a great way to replace those electrolytes after sweating them out. The bad news is that taste is not something I would want to drink in large quantities. I didn't even finish this little bitty glass of coconut water. But all is not lost. Coconut water would be a perfect addition to a smoothie, or some kind of mixed beverage.

In fact, Naked makes two of their fruit smoothies with coconut water. I like them both, they are lighter than the other smoothies and just as tasty. I just wish they had more flavors that feature coconut water.

So, my recommendation is to try the coconut water and see how you like it. Then, if you have the same problem that I do, just add it to your own homemade smoothies, or get the Naked smoothies made with coconut water instead.

Edited on 10-1-10 to add: I tried the Naked Coconut Water again a day or so after this taste test, and I was surprised to find that I liked the flavor much better. So, I am increasing the rating below.

I love coconut water. Great alternative to gatorade, etc.

Yeah, I can totally see that. None of the unnecessary sugars, just clean refreshing electrolytes.

How about Zico coconut water, have you tried it?

You know, I haven't tried the Zico yet. Naked was my first foray into coconut water. I am definitely willing to try more of them, and I have heard good things about Zico.

Also, I must confess, I tried the Naked again a day later, and it was much tastier. I'm not really sure how or why, but I am considering changing the rating here from 2 and 1/2 to 3 stars.

How about Vita Coco then?

Of course I would try the Vita Coco too. I'm game for trying anything vegan that does not contain mushrooms or eggplant.
