Jorge Garcia, Actor, Chihuahua Rescuer

Jorge Garcia
Jorge Garcia, of Lost fame, has been a vegetarian for some time and this summer he announced he went vegan. Hopefully it's working out for him, though I haven't seen a lot about it since. And about a year ago he rescued two super cute chihuahuas named, Pip and Smidge, from a rescue organization in California, Cuddly Canines. So much awesomeness!

I've been missing Lost recently, but I'm excited for Jorge's new show, Alcatraz, which looks like it could be just as myserious, and with an island. I think it's coming mid-season sometime, and will likely air on Mondays 8pm, Arizona time. Here's the trailer. Will you be watching?

Wait, this is Vegan Mofo. I'm supposed to talk about vegan food. Ok, Jorge makes his own almond milk and has step-by-step instructions on his blog, check it out. And I am completely jealous he got to visit VooDoo Doughnut in Portland; they have a complete line of vegan donuts. Oh, Portland, one of these days!

Vida Vegan Con

This past weekend was the first annual Vida Vegan Con in Portland, Oregon. "...A professionally run, annual conference designed to celebrate, explore, and fine-tune the practice—and ever-growing community—of vegan bloggers." I didn't even hear about it til recently, and so I didn't even get a chance to think about going. Maybe next year. I am dying to visit Portland.

Anyway, if you went and you want to share your experience, feel free to post it in the comments or share a link to your flicker photos, blog recaps, or youtube snippets.

If you want to hear more about the event...someone put together a Google reader bundle, and The Vegan Backpacker pulled together a list of the vegan blogger attendees and you can check out their individual reports. And lastly, a link to the Facebook group, Vida Vegan Con Bloggers.

Emily Dickinson, Poet, Baker, Vegetarian

Emily Dickinson is reported to have been a vegetarian. I have no idea how we know this, ('we' as in the general public, not the royal 'we') or what her reasons were. I did some basic googling and read some bio pages to see if I could come up with the source of this idea and I couldn't. Anyway, I just thought it would be cool to share a little about her today.

Many people know Emily Dickinson was a bit eccentric, reclusive, and depressed. Towards the end of her life, she wore only white- Memorial Day to Labor Day fashion rule be damned. And she would only talk to others as if she were confiding her sins in a confessional, on the other side of a barely open door.

She liked to bake and was supposedly very good at it. I found her recipe for Black Cake (aka Fruit Cake) online from the Library of America and I considered veganizing it and sharing that here. But I have to tell you, her version required 19 eggs and I am just not optimistic at the idea of using various egg replacers for that quantity. I whine when I see a recipe with 4 or 5 eggs, because it can get complicated in the substitution process, often requiring several different egg replacers. Experimental food chemistry is not my forte. But maybe you are braver and more ingenious than I am.

Rather than leave you with nothing, I did see these two recipes which are close to Emily's Black Cake. It is my opinion that, traditionally, fruit cake has been seasonal for winter simply because it used dried fruit instead of fresh fruit which I am sure back in the day was a bit harder to locate. So, in honor of Emily Dickinson who broke the 'rules' in many ways, go ahead and make a fruit cake for summer!

Emily incorporated a lot of nature into her poetry. Here are a couple of poems I like, and a link to where you can find a huge selection of her work online.

Part One: Life
VI

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

***

Part One: Life
XXXII

HOPE is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

***

(And probably one of her most famous poems.)

Part Four: Time and Eternity
XXVII

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –

Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –

Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –

Green ThanksLiving Recap...In Pictures

Here are a few photos from the Green Thanksliving event. I missed the speaker and the bands, pretty much. Oh well,  I had my delicious meal and friends and that's what counts!
The Gratitude Tree...I added a leaf. What a great idea.

Tables of people already digging into their meals.

The food line in the back and those lucky enough to be already eating.

I chose Pecan Pie for dessert... a little too sweet for me so I passed it on to my friends. Other options were: Vegan Pumpkin Pie with Soy Whipped Topping and Organic Winter Berry and Oat Granola Cobbler.

Green's Picnic Salad...mmmm. You can get this year round.

Vendor Merch

The Main Deal... Seitan Turkey Breast with Vegan Giblet Gravy, Sun Dried Cranberry and Toasted Walnut Stuffing, Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Corn with Smoked Paprika, Brown "Butter" Aparagus and Brussels Sprout, Cranberry Sauce, Artisan Bread.

Vegucating Robin: A New Reality [VEGAN] Cooking Show Starring Robin Quivers and Gavan Murphy

Vegucating Robin will be an online vegan cooking show. The Healthy Irishman, (nonvegan) Chef Gavan Murphy is going to teach Robin how to cook, and because she is vegan (she went vegan a few years ago), everything will be vegan. While I wish it was going to be on mainstream TV, I'm still pretty excited to see this. I probably could have used this show a few years ago. The first episode will air on December 1st.

6th Annual Thankful Veghead Dinner

Even before I went vegan, I started a vegetarian tradition of hosting a vegan dinner in the fall- a place where vegetarians, vegans, veg-curious, and veg-friendly could gather and feast. It's basically in the style of a tradtional Thanksgiving, only I don't like the Thanksgiving label and I prefer my meals to be free of harm to others.

This year was the 6th Annual Thankful Veghead Dinner. I'm not sure I originally expected it to be an annual tradition, but now I look forward to it every year.

This reference will probably be lost on most of you, since it is rather obscure, but for some reason every time I host a nice dinner party like this I think of the Disney movie, Child of Glass, where Barbara Barrie plans a fancy cotillion with mint juleps. Maybe it's her enthusiasm. Or that I love the idea of mint juleps even if I am not fond of the actual drink itself. And I'd love to go to a cotillion or even a masquerade ball. Alas, I'll just have to settle for movies and the rare syrupy sweet non-alcoholic mint juleps from Disneyland.

[You can watch the whole movie on youtube, just look for part one to get started, but you at the beginning of this clip is one spot where Barbara Barrie is talking about having a party. I love this movie. Sure, it's from the 70s but Disney made some good ghost stories back then. It's also based on the book, The Ghost Belonged to Me by Robert Peck, author of the Blossom Culp series, which this is a part of. Lastly, Anthony Zerbe plays a damn funny drunk.]

Maggie Q

Maggie Q, star of the new CW show Nikita, is big in Hong Kong and martial arts action movies. She's part Irish and Vietnamese and grew up in Hawaii. She's also a vegan and big-time advocate of PETA Asia-Pacific. She's been named Person of the Year, Sexiest Vegetarian, and Best Dressed all by PETA Asia-Pacific.

A few years ago she made these ads for PETA Asia-Pacific.

And a preview of her new show, Nikita.

Cloris Leachman

I am a bit of a TV junkie. There, now you know. And I get excited about the new Fall TV Season every year. One of the new promising shows is Raising Hope, costarring Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw. It premiered on Tuesday...and I laughed and laughed. It's the twisted humor that I loved in My Name Is Earl (boy, do I miss that show!) I highly recommend it.

Anyway, funny lady Cloris Leachman is a longtime vegetarian and vegan. I cannot even believe she is 84 years old! Below is a little behind the scenes video when she was doing the above photo ad. Check out the Facebook page for a video link to Cloris' visit to The Muppet Show back in '77-'78 where she mentions being a vegetarian on the show.

Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary in AZ

Several years ago, newly vegan, I went to a little presentation and book signing by Gene Baur, co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary. Farm Sanctuary is highly respected in the vegan community as not only a hands-on rescue group for farm animals and a huge advocate for them, but also an amazing influence on public policy and legislation.

The man is riveting, and not just because of his good looks! I highly recommend everyone go and hear his stories about how Farm Sanctuary began and the difference he and his organization have made since. He will inspire you too.

Gene is going to be in Arizona for two events on Thursday, September 30. Both events are free and open to the public. He will have copies of his book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, at the events. [One hundred percent of the author’s proceeds from book sales go to Farm Sanctuary.]

Event #1

I must confess that I don't know much about Black Sabbath, except Ozzy, but I have always liked the song Iron Man, for which Geezer wrote the lyrics.
