[Accidentally] Vegan TV

There's a blog and a YouTube Channel called, [Accidentally] Vegan, which collects videos of cooking shows where the recipes are, as the title suggests, "unplanned" vegan foodstuffs. Regulars from the Food Network (Guy Fieri, Ina Garten, Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis, etc.) are represented along with Martha Stewart, Debbi Mazar, The Chew, The Today Show, etc.

I love it cause you don't have to worry about veganizing anything or making conversions. The recipes are ready to go as is.

Penzeys Spices & Vegan Eats World

Penzeys Spices, Tempe Marketplace, Arizona
Penzeys Spices is a national chain with three locations in Arizona; Tempe Marketplace, Paradise Valley Marketplace (Phoenix), and Tucson. They also sell their spices online.

I recently wanted to make Terry Hope Romero's Pistachio Date Quinoa Salad from Vegan Eats World. But I didn't have any sumac. I know the Middle Eastern Bakery in downtown Phoenix carries it, Lee Lee Oriental Supermarket most likely does, but I needed a place in the north east valley. Then I remembered I had seen this little spice shop at the Tempe Marketplace. I called ahead and they stocked several container sizes of the ground up Middle Eastern berry.

Vegan Eats World Cookbook by Terry Hope Romero- 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up!
Penzeys Spices is a cute little shop with a good vibe next door to the Men's Wearhouse. I also noticed they had smoked paprika which I had been looking for previously. I had been using regular paprika as a replacement, but I kinda want to go back and get some smoked paprika. They had both Hungarian style AND Spanish style and I wasn't sure which I wanted to sample.

Anyway, I got the sumac and made the Pistachio Date Quinoa Salad, and I have to say I was impressed with the salad. It has chickpeas, spinach, parsley, onions, ground coriander, fennel and cumin seeds, as well as the sumac and title ingredients. My first thought was this is interesting... because I didn't know how to process the flavorings.

But it's a really nice salad, makes a nice, bold statement. I used about 3 tablespoons rather than the called for 4 to 6 tablespoons. Sumac smells like lemon vinegar, and the flavoring is oddly similar though reported to be less acidic and milder. The salad would be great for potlucks and such when you want to blow people's minds, and because it can be eaten at room temperature.

Anyway, for those of you with some BIG plans for holiday dinners or for those of you talking Terry's global cuisine cookbook, you have a good chance of finding what you need at Penzeys Spices, so give them a try.

The final product: Pistachio Date Quinoa Salad

Apple Annie's Orchard, Willcox, AZ

Picking chili peppers.

A photo journey.

My sis, bro in law, nephew and I visited Apple Annie's and picked some goodies from the land. We missed the apple picking season by one week, but we got some green beans, chili peppers, jalapenos, poblano peppers, eggplants, and okra. Sunflowers, pumpkins, bell peppers, tomatoes, and squash were also available for picking. We went kind of late in the picking season overall, so I recommend hitting them earlier in October or late September. Picking yourself is optional, all goodies are also offered already picked, but it is fun and cheaper to DIY.

Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Butters (didn't look to see if vegan, but betting so.)

Purty Corns.

Green Beans. My most favorite.

Yellow Eggplants. Not a fan of eggplant, these guys conned me into taking them home anyway.

Apple Trees. (er, I think)

Drying peppers.

Vida Vegan Con

This past weekend was the first annual Vida Vegan Con in Portland, Oregon. "...A professionally run, annual conference designed to celebrate, explore, and fine-tune the practice—and ever-growing community—of vegan bloggers." I didn't even hear about it til recently, and so I didn't even get a chance to think about going. Maybe next year. I am dying to visit Portland.

Anyway, if you went and you want to share your experience, feel free to post it in the comments or share a link to your flicker photos, blog recaps, or youtube snippets.

If you want to hear more about the event...someone put together a Google reader bundle, and The Vegan Backpacker pulled together a list of the vegan blogger attendees and you can check out their individual reports. And lastly, a link to the Facebook group, Vida Vegan Con Bloggers.

Vegan Black Metal Chef

The Vegan Black Metal Chef is all about style as well as tasty veganism, as you can see by his hardcore make-up, propensity for black, insane knives, and pentagram cutting boards. If you can handle the fact that the recipe instructions are sung growled black metal style, the Vegan Black Metal Chef offers vegan recipes to try, such as Pad Thai and Tempura Asparagus Sushi. I found the videos to be hilarious and entertaining. My throat winced in sympathy from all of the growling. But I think one thing is clear, everyone should have a black and silver-studded gauntlet for cooking.

Re. Tofu for the Pad Thai: "Form the triangles into the symbol of the ancients on the plate...."  haha!

"Cut the potato on the altar..." hahaha!

On the Road: Las Vegas, NV

As I know many of us Phoenicians road trip to Vegas, I thought I would pull together a few resources about eating vegan while there. It's getting easier, thanks to Chef Mayra of the new vegan restaurant Pura Vida Bakery and Bystro, and Steve Wynn and his requirement for all restaurants at the Wynn and Encore hotels to have a vegan menu. This should get you started. I haven't been in to Vegas in a long time, so be sure to report back with experiences and suggetions.

More from Earth Day Phoenix 2011

At the vegan info booth, we also had some vegan luxury handmade, eco-friendly soap samples from Strawberry Hedgehog.

Strawberry Hedgehog Pistachio Rosewater
I wish I could smell this through the computer!
I've been using soaps from Strawberry Hedgehog for months and I love them. In fact, I recently ran out and had to resort to a traditional soap bar which left my skin feeling slimey and coated with leftover soap. Ick. And it didn't smell nearly as nice as the Strawberry Hedgehog soaps do. I highly recommend these products.

You can find Strawberry Hedgehog products online, or locally in several fine establishments including Whole Foods, Inside the Bungalow, and ecocentricity. If you buy online today, be sure to check out the Earth Day Specials!

Also, a special thank you to Sapphic Graphics for providing us with the display art announcing our vegan intentions to the Earth Day Phoenix attendees. The design was simple and beautiful, with great colors.

Just plain awesome.

Cookie Recipes- Earth Day Phoenix 2011

There were four flavors of homemade cookies featured at Earth Day Phoenix; Chocolate Chip, Rocky Road, Espresso Chip Oatmeal, and another Chocolate Chip variation.

One of the chocolate chip recipes came from the cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz (Thanks to vegan caterer extraordinaire, Rikki Cupcake for those). The rest of the recipes were from Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero's Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar and were made by myself and my sister (Thanks, sis!).

Over at Isa's Post Punk Kitchen website, she has the chocolate chip cookies from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar featured. Here is the link to that delicious recipe. (I personally recommend the sweetened vanilla almond milk for baking, even tho Isa swears by unsweetened.)

I've featured the Rocky Road Cookies on here before, so I am just going to link to that older post.... Rocky Road recipe. I love these cookies. For such easy to make cookies, they really impress others.

If you want to the other two cookie recipes, I highly recommend tracking down these cookbooks. If you're desperate, email me and I'll make sure you get what you need.

It is safe to say, that if I am making cookies, my first stop is this book, Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. If you like cookies, this book is seriously worth the purchase. I thought I would mention some highlights. The Chocolate Chip cookies are AMAZING and wildly popular (recipe link above). So are the Rocky Roads (link also above). My mother adores the Frosted Grapefruit Icebox Cookies. I never was a huge fan of Snickerdoodles, but I love the City Girl Snickerdoodles. And the Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows are sublime! So many popular cookies are veganized and featured in this book; there's 100 cookie recipes inside.

And I just thought I would mention Terry and Isa's other dessert books, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World (phenomenal!) and the forthcoming pie-themed book, Vegan Pie in the Sky: 75 Out-of-This-World Recipes for Pies, Tarts, Cobblers, and More . The pie book, due out in October, will also have an entire section on vegan cheesecake...I can't wait!

Vegucating Robin: A New Reality [VEGAN] Cooking Show Starring Robin Quivers and Gavan Murphy

Vegucating Robin will be an online vegan cooking show. The Healthy Irishman, (nonvegan) Chef Gavan Murphy is going to teach Robin how to cook, and because she is vegan (she went vegan a few years ago), everything will be vegan. While I wish it was going to be on mainstream TV, I'm still pretty excited to see this. I probably could have used this show a few years ago. The first episode will air on December 1st.

Peruvian Food Resources

You are probably wondering why I am so focused on Peruvian food this week. Well, the fact is that even though I hadn't had it in awhile, I love it. They use a lot of cilantro and potatoes, which are two of my favorite things. And the fact is, it's different than the food I eat most of the time. It's not one of the more common ethnic foods available, like Italian, Chinese, etc. And there is a definite difference between Mexican food, which we have in abundance here in Phoenix, and Peruvian food. And I just wanted to share the love.

Here's how you can get some vegan Peruvian food too!

1. Viva Vegan: 200 Authentic and Fabulous Recipes for Latin Food Lovers by Terry Hope Romero

This very excellent cookbook has several vegan Peruvian recipes (both traditional and inspired nuevo Latino ones), as well as some from neighboring South American countries. While I used several of the Peruvian ones, there are a couple more that I didn't make yet: Quinoa Salad with Spinach, Olives, and Roasted Peanuts, Seitan Saltado (Seitan and Potato Stir Fry), Buttery Cookies with Thick Dulce de Leche Filling (Alfajores), Quinoa-Oyster Mushroom Risotto (Quinotto), etc.

2. Bryanna Clark Grogan is a great resource for Peruvian food as she is a professional vegan chef and her father was Peruvian.

Vegan Feast Kitchen
You pretty much have to search for her Peruvian recipes. Here are a couple direct links: Caldo De "Gallina" Vegan (Vegan "Peruvian Penecillin" or "Chicken" Soup, Peruvian Green Sauce, Camote Frito.

External link to her vegan recipes for Causa, Trigo, and Northwest-Style Mazamorra Morada (Peruvian Purple Corn Pudding). And Ensalada de Quinoa.

3. Vegano Peru Blog

A blog written by a non-Peruvian journalist living in Peru dedicated to "non-Peruvians interested in veganizing this South American cuisine, and for Peruvians who want to pursue a vegan lifestyle with more comfort and guidance here." Most of the posts are in both English and Spanish.

Sample recipe: Picarones

She also has a post with tips for vegetarian and vegan travelers to Peru. Sweet!

4. Vegan Backpacker Blog

This one is for if you get the lucky chance to travel to Peru. Just search for their Peru trip and you will find some great tips as well as learn from their experiences there.

Ex. Review of El Alma Zen Cocina Organica, Lima, Peru
Would love to go to Peru, and this would definitely be one of my stops.

5. HappyCow.Net
This one lets you search for veg-friendly restaurants in Peru. But don't take Hapy Cow for gospel, sometimes it's not as updated as we would hope.

Bonus: Vegan Good Eats has a recipe for Picarones too.
