Jorge Garcia, Actor, Chihuahua Rescuer

Jorge Garcia
Jorge Garcia, of Lost fame, has been a vegetarian for some time and this summer he announced he went vegan. Hopefully it's working out for him, though I haven't seen a lot about it since. And about a year ago he rescued two super cute chihuahuas named, Pip and Smidge, from a rescue organization in California, Cuddly Canines. So much awesomeness!

I've been missing Lost recently, but I'm excited for Jorge's new show, Alcatraz, which looks like it could be just as myserious, and with an island. I think it's coming mid-season sometime, and will likely air on Mondays 8pm, Arizona time. Here's the trailer. Will you be watching?

Wait, this is Vegan Mofo. I'm supposed to talk about vegan food. Ok, Jorge makes his own almond milk and has step-by-step instructions on his blog, check it out. And I am completely jealous he got to visit VooDoo Doughnut in Portland; they have a complete line of vegan donuts. Oh, Portland, one of these days!

David Zabriskie, Pro Cyclist

David Zabriskie
David Zabriskie is a world-class cyclist and has participated in Le Tour de France about 6 times. This last LTdF race, he planned to cycle sustained by a vegan diet. The first cyclist to do so. I believe he did plan to consume some fish a couple of times a week if it proved necssary, but it sounds like he was making the attempt to race with a mostly vegan diet.

Of course, this post is a little behind and Le Tour de France is over and David Zabriskie crashed out with some injuries. But I thought I would bring attention to him as an athlete and his vegan diet. He eats vegan because of the improved health and performance benefits he receives.

Here is a good article from the Wall Street Journal about Zabriskie, his move to veganism, and his 2011 plan for Le Tour de France. It includes his race menu. Looking forward to seeing him try again next year.

And here is his blog where he recaps his experience on Le Tour and in his career in general. His blog posts are rather engaging, even for those of us not into cycling. And he's a big fan of superheroes and comics, which is always cool in my book.

Lastly, check out this shirt you can buy on his website.

Farm Sanctuary, Jason Schwartzman, Babycakes

A short film/PSA from Plate to Planet a Farm Sanctuary project, voiced by vegetarian Jason Schwartzman (whom I love in HBO's Bored to Death. And I've got Scott Pilgrim waiting patiently on my DVR.)

Jason Schwartzman is reportedly a huge fan of vegan bakery Babycakes. Babycakes has two locations, NYC and LA. But never fear, the rest of us can enjoy Babycakes DIY goodies with their two cookbooks. I have yet to try the recipes, but that donut is looking pretty irresistible. Jason is featured in the first cookbook.

And because some days I miss The OC. Hahha. Jason was the drummer for Phantom Planet.

Bonus: Jason Schwartzman's musical nomme de plume, Coconut Records. I like this song...back-up singing from Zooey Deschanel.

Emily Dickinson, Poet, Baker, Vegetarian

Emily Dickinson is reported to have been a vegetarian. I have no idea how we know this, ('we' as in the general public, not the royal 'we') or what her reasons were. I did some basic googling and read some bio pages to see if I could come up with the source of this idea and I couldn't. Anyway, I just thought it would be cool to share a little about her today.

Many people know Emily Dickinson was a bit eccentric, reclusive, and depressed. Towards the end of her life, she wore only white- Memorial Day to Labor Day fashion rule be damned. And she would only talk to others as if she were confiding her sins in a confessional, on the other side of a barely open door.

She liked to bake and was supposedly very good at it. I found her recipe for Black Cake (aka Fruit Cake) online from the Library of America and I considered veganizing it and sharing that here. But I have to tell you, her version required 19 eggs and I am just not optimistic at the idea of using various egg replacers for that quantity. I whine when I see a recipe with 4 or 5 eggs, because it can get complicated in the substitution process, often requiring several different egg replacers. Experimental food chemistry is not my forte. But maybe you are braver and more ingenious than I am.

Rather than leave you with nothing, I did see these two recipes which are close to Emily's Black Cake. It is my opinion that, traditionally, fruit cake has been seasonal for winter simply because it used dried fruit instead of fresh fruit which I am sure back in the day was a bit harder to locate. So, in honor of Emily Dickinson who broke the 'rules' in many ways, go ahead and make a fruit cake for summer!

For more about Emily Dickinson, I shall direct you to Poets.org.

Emily incorporated a lot of nature into her poetry. Here are a couple of poems I like, and a link to where you can find a huge selection of her work online.

***

Part One: Life
VI

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

***

Part One: Life
XXXII

HOPE is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

***

(And probably one of her most famous poems.)

Part Four: Time and Eternity
XXVII

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –

Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –

Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –

Vegucating Robin: A New Reality [VEGAN] Cooking Show Starring Robin Quivers and Gavan Murphy

Vegucating Robin will be an online vegan cooking show. The Healthy Irishman, (nonvegan) Chef Gavan Murphy is going to teach Robin how to cook, and because she is vegan (she went vegan a few years ago), everything will be vegan. While I wish it was going to be on mainstream TV, I'm still pretty excited to see this. I probably could have used this show a few years ago. The first episode will air on December 1st.

Maggie Q

Maggie Q, star of the new CW show Nikita, is big in Hong Kong and martial arts action movies. She's part Irish and Vietnamese and grew up in Hawaii. She's also a vegan and big-time advocate of PETA Asia-Pacific. She's been named Person of the Year, Sexiest Vegetarian, and Best Dressed all by PETA Asia-Pacific.

A few years ago she made these ads for PETA Asia-Pacific.

And a preview of her new show, Nikita.

Cloris Leachman

I am a bit of a TV junkie. There, now you know. And I get excited about the new Fall TV Season every year. One of the new promising shows is Raising Hope, costarring Cloris Leachman as Maw Maw. It premiered on Tuesday...and I laughed and laughed. It's the twisted humor that I loved in My Name Is Earl (boy, do I miss that show!) I highly recommend it.

Anyway, funny lady Cloris Leachman is a longtime vegetarian and vegan. I cannot even believe she is 84 years old! Below is a little behind the scenes video when she was doing the above photo ad. Check out the Facebook page for a video link to Cloris' visit to The Muppet Show back in '77-'78 where she mentions being a vegetarian on the show.

Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary in AZ

Several years ago, newly vegan, I went to a little presentation and book signing by Gene Baur, co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary. Farm Sanctuary is highly respected in the vegan community as not only a hands-on rescue group for farm animals and a huge advocate for them, but also an amazing influence on public policy and legislation.

The man is riveting, and not just because of his good looks! I highly recommend everyone go and hear his stories about how Farm Sanctuary began and the difference he and his organization have made since. He will inspire you too.

Gene is going to be in Arizona for two events on Thursday, September 30. Both events are free and open to the public. He will have copies of his book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, at the events. [One hundred percent of the author’s proceeds from book sales go to Farm Sanctuary.]

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath

Wow, Geezer Butler, famous bassist of Black Sabbath, has been vegetarian since he was 8 years old!!

I must confess that I don't know much about Black Sabbath, except Ozzy, but I have always liked the song Iron Man, for which Geezer wrote the lyrics.

Fran Healy of Travis

I love the Scottish band Travis, and so I was pleasantly surprised that lead singer Fran Healy went vegetarian, and not only that, but Paul McCartney influenced Fran and his wife to make the change this past January.

Fran's got a new solo album out this October, and he's a fairly regular, and entertaining, blogger at his website. He posted his new single, Buttercups, on his website...here's the link.

I was trying to find a video interview with Fran about vegetarianism, but couldn't. So you'll just have to read the article above, listen to his music below, and check out his blog and the general interview with him and bandmate Dougie Payne from 2007.

Joanne Rose and Vegan 101 Webseries

Joanne Rose, a longtime vegan and a transplant from Australia now living in LA, is the creator of the comedic web series VEGAN 101, which takes the Vegan lifestyle to extremes for a bit of a laugh. She's also written a children's book called, Tommy Tofu Saves the Day.

Below are the Vegan 101 episodes 1-5...just remember, most vegans aren't like this but you might recognize some attributes in people you have met. And it's all just for fun.

And finally, an interview with Joanne Rose by LivingECHO.com's Ken Spector at the Green Lifestyle Film Festival.

Olivia Wilde; Wilde Things

Actress Olivia Wilde was recently named 2010's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity by PETA and fans. She's a vegan and an activist, and she has her own website, Wilde Things, where she talks about the causes that are important to her. She's also the Co-Executive Director of Artists for Peace and Justice, a non-profit group that is currently working on helping Haiti; and she sits on the foundation board of the ACLU in Southern California.

Olivia at ComicCon 2009.

How cool is she? Plus, she's currently at Comic-Con 2010 for the upcoming Tron: Legacy movie. There are so many awesome people at Comic-Con 2010 this week, I so wish I was there!!

Another Veganism Trial

Another journalist is going vegan, at least temporarily, and writing about the experience. This time it's Jessica Hullinger from Conducive Chronicle and she's doing a two-week trial period, with a potential for longer. Her reasons are more about the environment and minimizing her carbon footprint, but that is important too. I applaud her efforts, but I think a real trial period for veganism should be at least 3-4 weeks, in order to conquer new habits and break lifelong old ones and to really get a feel for a lifestyle. So I hope she gives it another 2 weeks. In the meantime, she's already learned a great deal of impressive stuff.

Read all about her first week here.

Robin Brande, YA Author

VegNews recently featured local, vegan author Robin Brande on their website. Robin Brande lives in Tucson and has written two YA books, Evolution, Me and Other Freaks of Nature, and Fat Cat, with her third book, Parallelogram, in the works.
Her interview convinced me to check out her books. Some excerpts:

RB: "The young women in my novels find what it takes within themselves to become stronger, more confident, happier, better able to be who they really are, no matter who's pressuring them to be otherwise. Plus, I always throw in some romance, because science always goes better with some kissing."

[I love that quote, "..science always goes better with some kissing". hahaha!]

VN: Tell us about your upcoming novel, Parallelogram.
RB: It's about a high school science genius, who uses her knowledge of quantum physics and string theory to bridge the gap into the next universe over, where she meets another version of herself who is very different from how she is here. She has to figure out how to become more like that girl than her own, less-exciting self. It's all based on my own secret wish that I were Xena or someone cool like that.

If it wasn't enough that she's a vegan from Tucson who writes strong female characters, with science and kissing, her quote about Xena is what sealed the deal for me. I am definitely reading her books.

Alicia Silverstone

I love Alicia Silverstone. Her passion for veganism is why she's one of my favorite vegan role models. Alicia wrote a book called The Kind Diet, which basically talks about why she went and stayed vegan, why you should too, how to make the transition, and shares loads of recipes. Here are a few interviews with her where she talks about the book and how veganism changed her life.

For more about The Kind Diet, see Alicia's website, The Kind Life.

Benjamin Zephaniah

I saw a featurette on VegNews about Benjamin Zephaniah, a British Jamaican vegan dub poet and writer. I decided to check out some of his work. I found him to be fascinating and I wanted to share him with you here.

This is part 1 of 6 of an interview with Benjamin on ConsciousTV, A Poet Called Benjamin Zephaniah. This 'short' 10 minute episode will give you a good flavor of his poetry and his life and personality, but I do recommend you watch the entire hour or so, which is available on youtube.

Below the video is a written version of the poem he opens with, for your reference.

A quote from Benjamin:
My favourite word is 'overstanding'. It's not a proper word. It means you have empathy with somebody. Politicians say: 'We understand you', then what do they do? They stand on top of you so you're under them.

Overstanding
Open up yu mind mek some riddim cum in
Open up yu brain do some reasoning
Open up yu thoughts so we can connect
Open up fe knowledge an intellect,
Open up de speaker mek we blast de sound
Open up de sky mek de Bass cum down
Open up yu eyes mek we look inside
If yu need fe overstand dis open wide.

Open up yu house mek de Refugee cum in
Yu may overstand an start helping
Open yu imagination, gu fe a ride
If yu want fe overstand dis open wide
Open up yu fiss an welcum a kiss
Getta loada dis open up business

Open up yu Bank Account an spend
Open up yu wallet an chech a fren,
Open up de dance floor mek I dance
Open up yu body an luv romance
If yu have not opened up, yu hav not tried
See de other side an open wide

Open up de border free up de land
Open up de books in de Vatican
Open up yu self to any possibility
Open up yu heart an yu mentality,
Open any door dat yu confront
Let me put it straight, sincere and blunt
Narrow mindedness mus run an hide
Fe a shot of overstanding
Open Wide.

Interview with Vegan and Animal Rights Activist, Bob Barker

Bob Barker has been an advocate for animals for years. His signature campaign is for spaying and neutering companion animals and adopting from animal shelters. I remember him always signing off The Price is Right with a reminder to people to "Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered". But he's been involved in many animal causes, anti-whaling, animals in entertainment, elephants in zoos, animal welfare laws, etc. Check out the Bob Barker vids below. Good stuff.

Interview with Bob Linden of Go Vegan Radio. (audio only)
